Wanderlust: Château de Pierrefonds

I'm truly astonished at the beauty of the châteaus of France.  I hope to one day be able to visit many of them. The Château de Pierrefonds is one of France's most beautiful medeival castles.  The majestic multi-level turrets and white stone facade, most notably being the inspiration for Cinderella's castle, can be seen for miles.  Originally built as a fortress, the picturesque castle is situated northeast of Paris, along the edge of the Compiègne Forest.

The Château includes most of the characteristics of defensive military architecture from the Middle Ages.  It underwent a complete restoration in the 17th century, leaving it with a fairy-tale silhouette, however, much of the interior is designed in the Renaissance style.  From the castle, you can appreciate the striking views of the quaint village of Pierrefonds and its lake, which is nestled in the towne centre.

The village of Pierrefonds offers many other sights to explore such as Château de Jonval and the Church of Saint-Sulpice.  You can visit the Château 2nd May to 4 September, 9:30am-6pm; 5 September to April, every day except Monday, 10am-1pm and 2pm-5:30pm.
